Colonel Sir David Stirling, DSO, OBE - founder of the Special
Air Service Regiment, 1941. Raised here in Scot-land, this 6ft
5in maverick designed the plan for L-Detach-ment, SAS Brigade.
By tricking his way into seeing commander-in-chief General

killed on capture. His ethos of the pursuit of excellence,
self-discipline, humility and humour is the hallmark of the
present day SAS. Two miles down B824 to Doune, from A9/M9

Stirling Old Bridge was constructed sometime around 1500. The
bridge was the lowest crossing point over the River Forth, all
armies going north or south had to cross here. It was also the
point where custom duties were levied on goods for market as
they entered the burgh. The customs man sat in a little roofed
booth situated halfway across the bridge; today this is marked
by a recess. (Map Grid Ref: C1)
